If you’re going to play retro arcade games, you’ve gotta have pizza. As of this weekend at Up-Down (101 Southwest Boulevard), pizza is on the menu. Actually, it’s the only food on the menu.
After a soft rollout this weekend, today is the first full day of pizza by the slice. Each day, at least four different kinds of slices will be available. You’ll always be able to get cheese or pepperoni for $3.50 a slice (and sausage, supreme and veggie will be rotated in throughout the day), but there will also be two specialty pizzas available each day for $4 a slice.
“The specialties are a bit more unique,” says Up-Down spokesman David Hayden. “We have a solid jalapeño popper pizza with a jalapeño/cream cheese base. The Mac & Cheese pizza has a cheddar base with bacon and mac and cheese baked on top.
Hayden says the pie will be “a doughy thin-crust pizza.”
Specialty pizzas that will be rotated into the lineup will be:
Alfredo Ham, Jalapeños: Alfredo sauce, smoked ham, mozzarella cheese, jalapeños
Mac & Cheese: cheddar cheese sauce, mozzarella cheese, mac and cheese, bacon, cheddar cheese
Jalapeño Popper: jalapeño cream cheese, mozzarella cheese, breaded jalapeños
Chili Cheese Dog: cheddar cheese sauce, mozzarella cheese, chili, bacon, onions, pickles, cheddar cheese
Bacon Cheeseburger: cheddar cheese sauce, mozzarella cheese, spinach, hamburger meat, bacon, onions
TBD: Alfredo sauce, spinach, artichokes, mushroom, green pepper, tomatoes
Philly Beef: cheddar cheese sauce, beef, sautéed green pepper and onions, cheddar cheese
Double Crust: red or Alfredo sauce, mozzarella cheese, any topping (three max) pizza dough
Slices can be ordered at the bar or through a server. Eventually, it’ll be served food-truck-style from a trailer in front of the arcade bar.
The pizzas are the creation of Up-Down manager Ronald Gomez, who was the only employee moved from the Des Moines location to Kansas City.
Up-Down has two full-size pizza ovens in the kitchen with the capability to cook a dozen pizzas at a time to keep up with the crowds, especially on packed First Fridays.
“We wanted something you can eat with one hand,” Hayden says. “We want people mingling and moving.”
Pizza will be available from open until midnight.
Up-Down claimed multiple Pitch Best of Kansas City awards, including Best Bar to Meet People, Best New Bar or Club, and Best Place for a Guys Night Out — as well as Best Iowa Import.
