82MAJOR ‘TAKEOVER’ the Gem Theater on first U.S. tour

After making their debut in 2023, the six-member boy group 82MAJOR embark on their 25-city U.S. tour, titled “82 Syndrome” to meet their North American fans for the first time, which hit the Gem Theater on Tuesday, July 8. The group is made up of Seongil, Yechan, Seongmo, Seongbin, Seokjoon and Dogyun. The group’s name derives from Korea’s calling code “82” and “Major” to symbolize their desire to achieve success and become global. During a talk with the fans, member Yechan, explains that their tour title plays on the idea of wanting to spread their energy in a contagious way.

The group opened with “TAKEOVER,” a hip-hop, trap, UK drill track from their recent EP that showcases their energy and dance skills. With razor-sharp dance formations, strong live vocals, and major charisma, 82MAJOR had the crowd screaming from the jump. In the K-Pop fan community, there is a running joke of barking at concerts drawing some funny reactions from K-Pop artists when they perform in America; 82MAJOR embraced the moment with laughter, clearly not being new to the energy of their American audience.

Between songs, the guys took time to chat with the crowd, sharing their thoughts on Kansas City and life on tour. Some talked about the intense training and extra hours in the practice room leading up to the tour, all so they could give 100% without missing a beat (or breath). Others mentioned exploring the local jazz scene and walking around the historic 18th and Vine District before the show. When they asked the audience for must-visit KC spots, fans were quick to shout out the usual response to try our famous BBQ.

The setlist featured a mix of intense performance tracks and lighter fan-favorite songs, giving the crowd a full range of the group’s talent. For the encore, the group performed “Sure Thing,” a smooth, feel-good pop track that had everyone swaying and singing along. As their debut release, it was a nostalgic moment for longtime fans and the perfect way to wrap up the night. If given the chance to see a K-Pop act in KC, I’d strongly recommend checking a show out!
