33 deer killed in controversy-free Shawnee Mission Park cull

Remember the good ol’ days when a deer cull in Shawnee Mission Park was met with animal-rights activists dumping buckets of blood on themselves and carrying around deer heads in protest? Those days are apparently over.
Last month, sharpshooters killed 33 deer in the park, according to The Kansas City Star. This helped park officials reach their goal of 50 deer per square mile. The hunt also did some good: 1,620 pounds of meat reportedly processed and given to needy families.
