Cutting fat, coloring with sonic crayons, and playing in the sandbox of pop

Go Indigo. // image courtesy the artist I met over the phone with Beau Harris, frontman of the band Go Indigo, battling his car Bluetooth speaker. It disconnected during the best part of every song. “I’ve had this car a long time—almost eight years. I’m not going to buy a new car over a Bluetooth speaker, but I’ve thought about…

Eat This Now: Cozy sammies at The Book Club

The Book Club lunch // Photo by Sarah Sipple Sometimes this type of story is about a food you simply must try–location be damned. Other times, like this one, the story is more about the location than a particular dish.  When I first read about The Book Club from The Pitch in September, it was immediately added to my mental…

As World Cup demands loom, transit leaders face hard decisions to pay for extra bus service

Kansas City has been asking the state and federal government for financial help to pay for extra buses during the World Cup. The clock is ticking, and the transit agency hasn’t gotten a dime.

Kansas City expects about 650,000 visitors next summer over the course of the Kansas City World Cup. KC’s transit agency is concerned that if buses or the streetcar are overwhelmed with tourists, that could impact bus service for the city’s residents. (Vaughn Wheat/The Beacon) The World Cup is just seven months away, and the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority faces…

Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man may not be perfect, but leading man Glen Powell sure is

Photo courtesy Paramount Since the beginning of Glen Powell’s ascendancy—which, in my eyes, really began in 2016 with Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!—it feels like he’s been on the hunt for a movie star persona. He’s come close, from entering the good graces of Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick to exhibiting star-power leadership on Twisters, generating behind-the-scenes rumors on…

Blondshell talks Freaky Friday, covering songs, and Notes app ahead of KC headlining debut

Blondhsell. // photo credit Daniel Topete Like an offhand snapshot archiving a specific moment in spectacular detail—including its imperfections—Sabrina Teitelbaum, aka Blondshell, shoots from the hip as a songwriter to craft her style of deeply emotional confessional anthems. “I don’t have any sort of ritual in terms of where I write or how I write,” Teitelbaum said in an interview…

Missouri GOP using incest victims, miscarrying women as bait to re-ban abortion

Most Missourians, like most Americans, do not want abortion to be a crime. This is a problem for Missouri Republicans, who demonstrated last legislative session that their top priority is not the business of the state and attending to Missourians’ needs, but the reinstatement of the abortion ban that voters just rejected. Because they know their constituents do not want…
