Airick West, school board president, puts onus on students to help fix troubled schools
The auditorium was packed last night as school board president Airick West took the podium and issued a first-ever State of the District address.
He discussed the district’s achievements, which include attaining a fully balanced budget for the first time in the district’s memory — due to rightsizing, he said — and maintaining the same number of students today that the district ended last year with. He did acknowledge the setbacks. “We know in some of our schools we have had unrest, even violence,” he said, and added that some students are “deeply frustrated” with their educational experience. But the remedy, he insisted, lay within the students themselves.
